What Makes a Terrific Parent?

What Makes a Terrific Parent? | Momfulness | Scoop.it
That may sound obvious, but some parents use their children to meet their own emotional needs -- and seem unaware that they're doing so.

A group of Dutch researchers found that one of the most important factors in predicting parenting quality was the level of understanding of children's unique interests and needs, along with a willingness to consider that perspective as distinct from the parent's own. Canadian researchers discovered that parents who were better able to "accurately perceive their [teenage] children's thoughts and feelings during a disagreement" ended up having fewer conflicts -- or at least a more satisfactory resolution of the conflicts that did occur.

Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

Learning to let our kids be their own separate unique person is a key feature of terrific parenting.

Promoting Positive Behavior

Promoting Positive Behavior | Momfulness | Scoop.it

As a parent and a child psychologist I firmly believe in focusing on reinforcing positive behaviors  as opposed to punishing negative ones.  This stems from my knowledge of what behaviorists have studied about human behavior … AND my first hand experience with kids.  Positive reinforcement works … and also helps foster independence, life skills, and self-esteem.  It focuses more on mutual respect than power-differentials.  Punishing (such as time-outs and taking away privileges) works too and it is sometimes needed, but if positive behaviors are reinforced regularly there will be less of a need for the punishments … and in turn less power struggles.
